Founded in the 15th century, Château de Pez is the oldest domaine in Saint-Estèphe. The Pontac family, then-owners of Château Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The property remained in the hands of descendants until the French Revolution. Sold as a property of the state, the domaine belonged to a succession of families until 1995, when it was purchased by Champagne Louis Roederer.

Château de Pez is one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux’s Left Bank and consists of 118 continuous acres with 103 acres planted to prime grape varieties, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Thanks to the quality of its production, Château de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Médoc and was reclassified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003. And in very good company with  Château Calon Segur just slightly northeast and Cos d'Estournel directly south.

The 2019 2nd Pez is a jewel in the crown of Château de Pez, representing the utmost in quality and tradition. 2nd Pez is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot that boasts an alluring bouquet of red fruits, blackcurrants, dried tobacco leaf, and hints of cedar. The aroma is as inviting as it is complex. On the palate, you'll be greeted by flavors of ripe cherries, blackberries, and subtle notes of spice. The wine offers a harmonious balance between its fruit-forward nature and structured tannins, making it a wine of ability. The finish is long and elegant, leaving a lasting impression of freshness and finesse. If you love classic Bordeaux with a harmonious balance of old-world nuances and a delicate display of new-world fruit, then this wine is for you!

James Suckling: 92 Points

This is nicely crafted with extra-fine tannins that are fresh and polished. Good fruit and length. It’s medium-bodied with finesse. Pretty second wine.
